Value Builder™ Certified Advisor

Most business owners aren't owners. They're self-employed — and don't know it yet.

If your business stalls the moment you stop rowing, you don't own a business — you own a very demanding job. I help owner-operators in the £500k–£5m range chart the course from operator to true owner: a business that runs, scales, and sells without you holding it up.

Sound familiar?

You've built a good business. But it's built around you.

These are the five signs your business isn't ready — whether for a sale, a step back, or simply more freedom.

Unsure what it's worth

You've invested years into this business, but you don't have a clear number — or a buyer wouldn't pay what you'd expect.

Revenue is unpredictable

Good months, then quiet ones. No recurring income to speak of. Acquirers discount businesses with lumpy revenue heavily.

Over-reliant on key people

If one or two people left tomorrow — including you — would the business survive? Buyers and acquirers will find out.

No clear exit plan

Selling or stepping back feels years away — so it never gets started. The best exits take 3–5 years to prepare properly.

Meet the advisor

I've been where you are. I've also got out.

I'm Sam Cooper — exit strategist and accredited Value Builder™ advisor. I spent 18+ years building, scaling, and exiting SMEs. I know what it feels like to be the person holding everything together, and I know what it takes to finally hand yourself the helm.

My journey into exit planning started when I helped my own father retire from the family business. Not long after, I made my own exit. I've lived this, not just coached it.

I'm also a husband and father to two wonderful kids. And I believe that's exactly the point — your business should be funding your family's aspirations and lifestyle, not stealing your time and keeping you away from the people who matter most. If it's doing the latter, something needs to change.

As a Certified Value Builder™ advisor, I work with business owners who want to:

  • Get their time back and stop being the bottleneck
  • Build a business that runs — and has real value — without them
  • Exit on their terms: profitably, confidently, and without regret

Common questions

You might be wondering…

Is it too early to start exit planning?
+
Not at all — in fact, the earlier you start, the more control you have over the outcome. Most successful exits take 3–5 years to prepare properly. Starting now gives you time to improve your Value Builder score, build recurring revenue, and remove your dependency from the business. Waiting until you're ready to sell almost always costs you money.
What if I don't actually want to sell — just step back?
+
That's a perfectly valid goal — and exactly what the Value Builder framework is designed for. Building a business that runs without you isn't just an exit strategy, it's an ownership strategy. Whether you want to travel, work fewer hours, or just stop being the bottleneck, the same principles apply.
Can I exit but still keep some income from the business?
+
Yes — many owners retain income post-exit through partial sales, management buy-outs, earnout structures, licensing arrangements, or by retaining a minority stake. We'll look at what makes sense for your situation during our work together.
How much time does the programme take each week?
+
Plan for 1–2 hours per week. That includes the weekly coaching call and working through the structured modules. It's designed to fit around running your business, not replace it.
Does this work in my industry?
+
Yes. The Value Builder framework works across all industries because it focuses on how your business functions — not what it sells. The 8 drivers apply whether you're in professional services, manufacturing, retail, or anything else.
What if I don't have a buyer lined up?
+
Most people don't — and that's fine. The focus of this work is making your business genuinely attractive and exit-ready, so that when the right opportunity arrives, you're in control of it rather than scrambling to react.
